Cake Servings & Info

Cake Servings

Cake Servings details a ratio of how many slices can be cut in a whole cake.  It’s based on slice 2″x3″ or 2×2″.  Depending on the size slice that is cut and how many layers, it could be more or less pieces.

The data within the serving chart below represents the average PARTY CUT serving.

Layer Cakes

What is a Layer?  Layers are levels of baked cake between the filling/frosting of your choice.

Except for 6″ & 8″ cakes(unless customized ordering, see: custom), all of our cakes are available in 2 or 3 layers.  Layers can range from 1/2-inch to 1 1/2 inches tall.  Sheet cake layers are usually in the lower range in height, and shaped rectangular.  Round cakes are taller due to each layer baked in individual pans.  Sheet cakes, while they lack height, make up for it due to it being easier to design on.  More space!  Perfect for group events/functions and children’s birthday parties.  More layers are beneficial because you can cut slices slimmer.

Cake Sizes

The sheet cakes sizes we offer are 9″x13″ – Quarter Sheet & 12″x18″ – Half Sheet.  This cake is shaped like a rectangle.  All of our other cake sizes are round.  They range from 6 inches to 14 inches diameter.  More specifically: 6″, 8″, 9″, 10″, 12″ and 14″.  We also offer 6″ Square — custom orders only at this time.

Cake Height

Cake height can vary, which also can readjust cake serving depending on the cut.  The average cake height is around 3.5 to 4″ tall.  There are cakes that are 6″ tall, depending on the cake, and usually if it has at least 3 layers.  There are instances (usually customized) where cakes are over 6″ tall.  In the industry, we usually call that “double barrel” cakes.  Double barrel cakes consist of two, same sized tier cakes, frosted together to achieve an extremely tall cake.  Example below:

Tier Cakes

Tier just means different levels.  Unlike a double barrel cake, tier cakes are usually different levels (sizes), i.e. 8″ round top, 10″ round bottom (See below).  Think of a standard wedding cake.  Tiers can be different flavors, shapes, sizes or colors.  All tiers, except for the top tier (or level) of a cake has a dowel support system.  Dowels support the weight of each tier level, to avoid sinking below due to the weight of the cake above.  Gravity!  For extra support, a center dowel is sometimes used to support the cakes’ movement (or lack of) structure.  During transportation of desserts, unfortunately a speed bump or a quick turn cake realign your cake, so a center dowel adds to structural support.  Dowels can be made from wood, plastic or metal.
